Professionalism

The primary goal of the professionalism standard is to set guidelines for how teachers should behave both in and outside of school. This standard emphasizes continued professional development as a way for teachers to expand their skills and grow professionally. It also stresses the importance of maintaining professional relationships with colleagues, parents, and members of the surrounding community. Playing an active role in the school and its community is an essential part of being a teacher.

Teacher Associations

One way teachers can stay informed about the most recent educational research and information is by joining a variety of teacher associations. I am a member of the National Education Association (NEA), the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), and the Virginia Education Association (VEA).

Education Conferences

Education conferences are also a valuable tool for continuing professional development. Conferences give teachers an opportunity to hear from experts and colleagues about a variety of educational topics. I plan to attend as many conferences as possible to gain valuable information about the latest educational trends and research. Some important education conferences include:

Virginia Society for Technology in Education’s annual conference
International Society for Technology in Education’s annual conference

Community & School Involvement

Being an involved member of the community is an important civic duty. As a teacher, I will stay involved in my school and community by participating in and leading after school programs for students, being involved in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and attending school board meetings.

Certifications

An important aspect of the professionalism standard is maintaining necessary certifications and participating in training sessions that keep teachers up to date on the most recent developments in child safety and learning such as CPR, dyslexia awareness, and child abuse and neglect recognition.

CPR Certificate
Dyslexia Awareness Certificate
Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition Certificate
