Professional Knowledge

Meeting the professional knowledge standard is crucial to a teacher’s success because it holds teachers accountable for their content knowledge and how they use that knowledge to deliver lessons to students. Teachers must align their lesson plans with the state’s curriculum and they must have the skills to deliver the content effectively. A successful teacher demonstrates a mastery of subject area knowledge, effective pedagogy, an understanding of their students’ developmental stages, and clear and effective communication skills.

Classroom Technology Experience

Prior to completing my Masters in
Teaching, I was employed by a local audio-visual company, Lee Hartman & Sons, Inc, in Roanoke, VA for almost six years. In my position as the Marketing Director and Product Specialist at Lee Hartman, I was responsible for training K-12 customers on educational technology including smart boards, interactive projectors, document cameras, Makerbot 3D printers, SMART Notebook and other interactive software programs. I hold the following SMART Technologies certifications: SMART Digital Educator, SMART Elite Software Solutions Professional, and SMART Certified Technical Professional for Software. Working with and training teachers for over five years has given me invaluable experience with various classroom technologies and I look forward to using these technologies in my future classroom.

Subject Knowledge

In addition to passing all of the Elementary Education Praxis II exams, the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment, and the Reading for Virginia Educators: Elementary and Special Education Praxis exam, I also took several courses at Hollins University that have helped prepare me to teach elementary education including Language Acquisition I, Language Acquisition II, Teaching Social Sciences, Teaching Math & Science, Classroom Management and Organization, Children’s Literature, Classroom Technology and Integration, Psychology of Teaching and Learning, and Teaching in American Society. I participated in practicum assignments for both Language Acquisition I and II that gave me hands on experience assessing children’s reading abilities and designing lesson plans to cater to their reading levels. I participated in a month long internship in a 2nd grade class at Fishburn Park Elementary School in Roanoke City and am currently a student teacher in a 4th grade class at Colonial Elementary School in Botetourt County.
